Applied to well over 200 jobs since March and still haven’t found one... mostly looking at graphic design, digital stuff, and video editing. Have had a few interviews but they told me they’ll get back to me and have not.
I really also just want to gtfo NY and Lawn Guyland cause my sisters and parents drive me nuts at times. I love them, but I need distance from them.

I hereby name today “RageQuit Thursday”

Who else?

At least they are letting you know the answer is no. Some response is better than no response. I’ve been convinced during past job searches that there is someone out there just trolling me by offering up jobs that don’t exist just so they can feed off my disappointment. Sounds like an episode of X-Files....

Yeah, I mean it does give me some semblance of hope that at least someone is looking through these job applications.

If you want, I can send you my contact info, portfolio, resume, etc. I’m fine with moving, as long as it’s in the continental US and Cape Cod isn’t very far from New York. Thanks.

There’s a lot of competition, Nibby. I should know, in high school I did vocational training in RTF, and most of my graphic design work and video editing simply turned into me making AMVs as a hobby, because no one paid me for it. I was more successful (obviously) with the written word.
Lots and lots of people have the training and education in this stuff, and a lot of employers think they can undercut you. Also, you’ll get offered a lot of shit freelancing gigs, because some people are under the assumption that freelancing is some kind of adult version of interning. *eye roll*

Video editing is tough to get into. Where are you applying to?
Feel free to shoot me an email, I may be able to help.

Applied mostly to jobs in New York and Texas.

Yeah I have a Master’s from a reputable university and digital media program. Thanks for your advice and passing down your own experiences.

Will do, thanks!

Yeah, the HS program I was in was supposed to prepare us to essentially skip out on university (hence vocational), and it DID give us skills to draw on. One of our number even went on to work on The Social Network film (she’s even in it, briefly, as she was a technical person they grabbed for a party scene, she does have some lines, too), and I got some work interning with the DNC, but mostly... We haven’t been able to turn those skills into full time positions. Just gigs here and there.

At least they replied! lol
I feel your pain though. I went through a very similar experience after graduating a few years ago. This is the new norm for getting a job after school these days. Keep plugging away at it, and definitely network. Both of my big kid jobs have been obtained through connections. Build a good LinkedIn profile, and talk with friends and family. Let them know you’re looking for a job, don’t necessarily ask them to give you one but let it be known. Something will come along.
(I’m also certain that if there is a hell it’s most likely going to be an eternity spent job hunting.)

Thanks mate!

Well, there’s a fine line between a listed opening and applying for a position. My last couple jobs were not advertised openings. My previous job wasn’t even an open position, I just walked in and ended up being offered a position. I have a few friends who work in that specific industry that may be able to help you as far as knowing about open positions.
Do you have a reel/portfolio and resume?
![]() 07/30/2015 at 11:58 |

Yeah, I have both a portfolio and resume, including a video section on my site. Should I send them your way?

Design and creative things are a tough field to be in. Not many companies pay well for it, but they won’t blink an eye at paying an ad agency $100/hr. I went to school for graphic design then worked for a large format printer for 8 years. Got lucky finding my current job.

I applied for a Jimmy John’s Corp position once and did a group interview at their HQ and it dwindled down from about 12 to 2. I was picked as one of the two and did Skype interviews for two weeks.
I never got a call back from them at all.. They even went as far as ignoring my phone calls when I called to find get a no answer. Fuck them.
*Note: This was about 3 and a half years ago.. I have since moved on from this into a better position at current employer*

:/ that’s terrible! But you’re onto bigger and better things now. :)

Have you looked at newspapers? The pay sucks but it’s good experience that can help you move up to something more substantial. If you can get in on the advertising side instead of the editorial side, that would help you even more because any employee with any skill set with a good business sense would be desirable.

I’m learning this the hard way ;_;
Thanks though

Yeah, send me a link, and include a current copy of your resume and ill take a look and give you suggestions as needed, and if I can push it toward someone, I will let you know when I do.

I feel you bud, same boat here except looking for teaching or museum work....most of the places will send out a “we got your application” email, but nothing after that unless you were selected for an interview...

If you’re in the NYC area, look at NYFA’s job section.

Nova Scotia, Canada...so slightly far from NYC, haha!

Cracking into a big daily like that is going to be tough. A lot of them aren’t even hiring, or at the very least don’t advertise when they are. I was thinking more smaller community papers.

I got three rejections in one day last year.
I hadn’t applied for a job in over two years at that point...that was one helluva confusing, fuckitall kinda day.
![]() 07/30/2015 at 14:38 |

Yeah that happened to me a couple weeks back... A bit deflating.

I used to work in graphic design & marking.
200 applications sounds... “unfocused.”
Watch “Mad Men” ... one of the first seasons with flashbacks of how Don got his job working with Roger Sterling.
Sending a resume in gets you less response than showing up on doorsteps with a good attitude and a stellar portfolio.
Do your homework. Figure out which companies you WANT to work for and which are in need of new staff. Go after only those ones and start by inviting someone there out for lunch.

Thanks for the suggestions

Getting that first job is the worst. It took me a year and a half. I had a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and 6 years of experience in the Navy, and was trying to stay in the Marine Engineering/Naval Architecture field, which is a HUGE industry in the DC area and it took me a year and a half. S
So best of luck to you, and whatever you do, don’t get discouraged, keep trying and something will turn up.

Do you have a LinkedIn? I have a couple of buddies in the field and its so specific that you want to market yourself very well. But with a Master’s you should be all set. Also do you have a Fiverr account? Freelance until you land something big, and I know people are always looking for your talent on Fiverr.
